Our expertise

Smart solutions for
complex infrastructure

Complex programmes fail not for lack of effort, but for lack of integration, intelligent sponsorship and honest governance. These are precisely the areas we focus on — designing smart solutions alongside helping organisations to re-engage with the basics that large programmes too often lose sight of.

Programme Integration

We have experience of integrating projects into coherent, efficient and valuable programmes of work in areas as diverse as Brexit preparation for manufacturers and rail infrastructure upgrades. We also have experience of integrating the processes of different teams and discipline functions within projects.

  • We are currently working in partnership with Agilia Infrastructure Partners to plan and implement changes to an operating model for a programme of infrastructure and building upgrades on an innovation and manufacturing campus. We are applying our experience to tailor best practice on organisation design and behaviour change to the specific risks and constraints of the commercial model. We are also helping leaders to understand how to build a more capable client organisation that can enable, support and provide clear leadership to several interconnected project teams simultaneously.
  • Working with Expedition Engineering, we developed a management framework that is enabling teams on the ground at a major energy infrastructure project to prepare for construction in an integrated, efficient and predictable way across multiple teams and work packages. To do this, we brought project managers together with the corporate functions that enable delivery and set standards to understand their difficulties and tailor a solution that makes it easier for them to remember what they need to do, collaborate, check and report progress, and for leaders to ensure that work packages are managed and reported on consistently and without long lead-in activities being started too late.

Intelligent Sponsorship

We have helped new teams grow so they can act as a knowledgeable, demanding client while navigating investment approvals, procurement authority and governance scrutiny. We have extensive experience of managing the human side of complex programmes: political, regulatory, community and supply chain relationships.

  • Working in partnership with CPC Project Services, we led the development of a transition strategy to enable HS2 Ltd. to work effectively alongside a new delivery body being set up by the Department for Transport. To do this, we articulated the target operating model for different stages of change, helping the Department to define the new interfaces and leading the high-level planning so that no important actions are missed across what is a complex transition involving regulatory, legislative, financial, commercial, technical and psychological factors.
  • In addition to sponsoring integration of multiple £multi-billion projects at Euston, our team has led the design of private-public investment framework options for the UK's rail industry, and developed a strategic case for intervention which resulted in broadening scope of a £multi-million, multi-year Government grant competition to increase the UK's health resilience and life sciences sector productivity.

Honest Governance

We design frameworks and assurance services that give leaders the confidence to make big decisions — and the audit trail to defend those decisions. We have experience of where this has gone well and lessons from where we have seen it fail, ready to apply our learning without fear or favour.

  • Working in partnership with Expedition Engineering, we are coordinating assurance of £multi-million contract packages for a civils delivery programme of a major energy infrastructure project. We are providing the framework and the relationship-building that enables our expert partners to bring their extensive engineering, contracting, estimating and project controls expertise to this critical, high-value assurance.
  • In previous roles, our team has been in Government sponsor roles scrutinising project performance and making decisions through governance boards, and in construction client teams responsible for providing sponsors with intelligent and robust programme data to support planning, negotiations and decision-making.
